Beat The Summer Blahs~Volume 1

I don't know about ya'll, but for me the lure and excitement of summer wears off about the 4th week in. So this year, I come prepared with some cute ideas! Here is my first installment of Beat The Summer Blahs. I am an easy-does-it kind of gal when it comes to random activities and everyone who knows me knows that messes and stains send me into panic mode fast. So, I assure you, these looked easy and farely mess free, except for the paint of course but that can be hosed off as it takes place in the backyard. Just click on each title to go directly to the site for further explanation.

My friend Robin and I were shopping for salt water taffy late one Friday night (don't ask), and came across those cute blue and white gummy sharks...you know the type. We commented that they would be cute in blue jello and I thought it would be better to take it a step further and get a fish bowl and fill it with swedish fish gummies too! My kids will LOVE this.

It just sounds like a good idea to me to drill holes in a 2-liter soda bottle and fill it with water.
Why not, right?

Tape some paper (or 50 cent poster board) to your back fence, throw smocks on your kids and let them paint away. Lots of room for everyone and easy clean-up!

A few snips of some colorful paper, a pin or bracket, and you have a cute summer decoration AND a fun craft for the kids. This site shows them pinned to the eraser of a pencil. Now THAT is a great back to school teacher gift. But we aren't going to talk about that yet!

When you want something cute for the cooler, and you need a craft idea...paint and decorate a few clothespins and you will have the beginning of a cute snack bag!

Last Week Of School

Today and tomorrow are Isaac and Jayden's last full days of school. Then on Thursday I will pick them up at 1:15 to officially start our summer. Isaac is incredibly excited. Look how much he has grown this year! I took the left picture on the first day of school and then the right one was taken last week at his awards ceremony.
Wowza...what a growth spurt.
He was awarded this blue ribbon for A/B honor roll all year.
He has also been bringing home his year's worth of work, lots of writing pieces. The above one is one of our favorites.
And so is this one:
What a great boy we have!

Summer Reading Program

In an attempt to keep the kids minds working over the next 3 months, I put together a summer reading program.

I cut out tickets that I downloaded from the blog,
Next year, I will get those adorable galvanized buckets and colored cardstock she uses...but this year I needed to utilize only what I had on hand already around the house.

Everyone decorated a bag with star and Dr. Suess book stickers.
As they earn their tickets for reading (or looking at books) for 20 minutes, they will be able to exchange them for prizes!
The prizes range from treats, to special one-on-one activities with Mom and Dad, to a stay up late pass.
That will be a crowd favorite, for sure.
At the end of the summer, we will celebrate with lunch out and each child will get to buy a new book.
I expect this will keep them quite busy and motivated.

Our First Waterpark Visit Of The Season!

We celebrated the weekend at a local waterpark. Billy's sister flew in yesterday, so today we took advantage of tickets we had won at Christmas time through a contest.
It included 4 admission tickets, a cabana rental, unlimited drinks, and combo meals.
We had cabana boys who brought us all our food and drinks...they actually called themselves that.
It was very relaxing to not have to be in charge of cooking at ALL today for my family!
Jasmine did not enjoy the idea of all this water.

This was the result of her getting her head wet just minutes into the experience. She didn't recover for 4 hours, crying every single time we got her near water.

She was most happy in her porta crib in the shade of the cabana.
She spent ALOT of time there dancing to the music and eating snacks.

Then after a rest time in a fresh diaper and outfit, we changed her into a dry bathing suit and tried the water again. This time I remembered her bucket.
 That made ALL the difference.

With her "magic" bucket she was no longer afraid of the water and enjoyed herself for about 45 minutes.

Who knew that a bucket could be this soothing!!

Something To Think About

As the month wraps up...
Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity to shine a light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in the foster care system. The campaign raises awareness about the urgent needs of these young people and encourages citizens from every walk of life to get involved – as foster or adoptive parents, volunteers, mentors, employers or in other ways. ~Fostercaremonth.org

Summer Activities

"What are you going to do ALL summer with ALL those kids?"

I get asked that question often.

Well ... I suppose we will do the same things we have enjoyed every year no matter how many kids we had. For fun, let us take a little walk down memory lane of summers of the past, as we explore our family's very favorite things to do during summer vacation!

We do not get out to the movies often during the year.
Let's face it: admission for 5 is not cheap, people!
So during the summer I love to look up all the theaters in our area who are participating in summer movie clubs.
These are usually around $1.00 a ticket for previously released kids movies.
We try to attend one a month.
I always try to get out our slip n' slide and blow-up pool atleast once a week. The kids enjoy hot dogs and popsicles in their little stadium chairs while they soak up the warmth.
Our surrounding towns have lots of little adorable snow cone stands.
This is usually an after dinner activity when the sun starts to go down.
The Icecream Truck would also fall into this category.

Every couple of years we go to Pensacola, Florida to visit Billy's aunts who live there.
They spoil the kids rotten and take us to outdoor concerts, 4th of July fireworks, and a cute little amusement park called Sam's Fun City.
We love the beaches, especially Navarre...and always look forward to eating seafood at a nice place near the water that serves the most amazing hush puppies with queso. YUMMO!
Our week wouldn't be complete without beach portraits of the kids and Pensacola t-shirts purchased at Alvin's Island. This trip is always the hightlight of our summer.

All I have to say about this is: Air Conditioner.
A MUST to survive summer in Texas!
We are blessed to have lots of water parks to drive to from big overpriced parks to small inexpensive ones and even free splash grounds. We visit several throughout the summer as my boys were born half fish. This year we will also be taking swimming lessons.
One of my personal summer favs is all of the glorious produce in season during the summer.
We use this time to visit farmer's markets and usually have some variety of fruit with every meal and for snacks. I make fruit smoothies for breakfasts and big salads with pita bread wedges and hummus for lunch.
Okay, this may not be one of Isaac's favorite activities...but it is mine for the time it takes up in the afternoons! Every summer, I buy the kids Brain Quest Workbooks in the grade level they are going into in the Fall. We work on them 4-5 times a week. This keeps them from getting summer brain drain and helps to give them an edge on knowing the concepts that will be taught to them in the school year. You can purchase them at Costco and Barnes and Noble.
The workbooks are colorful and fun and have incentive stickers.
Vivianna LOVES hers.
Every summer, Chick-fil-A has a cow appreciation day.
If you dress like a cow from head to toe, you will get to choose any meal off the menu! As embarrassing as this is for me...I mean come on it is ridiculous looking...I will take public humiliation any day to take my entire family out for dinner for FREE! This year, it is July 13th and Jasmine will also dress up because they now have grilled chicken nugget kids meals. Score! Maybe for the first year ever we can get Billy to dress up. Yeah, if pigs fly too.
And finally...the kids are always involved in week long summer camps. Last year it was Family Camp in Arkansas for all of us. This year it will be local day camps: Cheerleading for Vivi, VBS for all three, and for Isaac: Sports Camp one week and Drama Camp the next. This keeps them socializing and gives them an opportunity for exercise and time spent away from the TV,
plus Mom gets a little break.
 Bonus for all of us!

So how will you be spending your summer?

Summer Vacation Buckets!!!

We are quite ready around here for summer.
Today is Vivi's last day of school and the boys go just 3 days next week and then their summer will begin. This weekend is our official summer kick-off and as I can never pass up a reason to party: I will be giving the kids these buckets to celebrate...
I purchased beach buckets and shovels at Target and then ordered these vinyl letters and adorable images for just $2.50 a kid from the Etsy shop: One Sassy Lil Sweet Pea. They turned out SO cute!
The boys buckets have personalized beach towels that are on sale
at Pottery Barn Kids (plus free shipping!).
I put brown paper crinkles in there to look like sand.
Then I found a 3 pack of Speedo goggles to put a pair in each bucket, and flip flops at Old Navy for just $2 a pair.
I added some fun little treats like Pirate Booty and applesauce pouches, plus sunglasses.
Jasmine's itty bitty bucket also has a hot pink swim cap from Froggies Swim Caps.

This is mainly to keep the sand out of her scalp at the beach this summer.

I hope this inspires you to thick outside the beach bucket and do something super FUN with your kids as you kick off :

~Summer Vacation 2012~

Stay tuned for a exciting surprise for all of you that I will announce next week!
