Jasmine's Surgery

Today my friend and I took Jasmine to the hospital for her ear tubes and adenoid removal.
Before the drama began! :)
She did SO well pre op. Here she is in her gown. The one they gave her was huge so I asked for a smaller one which looked adorable on her!
Jasmine getting a book read by "Aunt" Shannon!
After the surgery, they called us back and she was asleep and drinking her pedialyte.
It was so cute!!!
Once she woke up, she raged for about 20 minutes....mainly because she wanted this junk OFF her leg...like NOW! After they removed her IV, she got a slush to eat and Little Einsteins on the TV in a rocking chair with Mama. That is when she finally settled down.
Here is her baby hanging out with her new bear that the hospital gave her. Overall things went great! At home she has been very very fussy so we are keeping the Tylenol and bottles coming and having to basically put her down for a nap every hour or so because she will cry uncontrollably. I am hoping we don't have a rough night. A friend emailed me and said that her son started walking within 24 hours of his tubes, so we will see how she does in that department this weekend!!

Tea Party

My friend Whitney hosted a tea party for her daughter's 6th birthday last weekend.
The girls dressed in princess attire and enjoyed a frilly lunch and candy buffet.

Jasmine enjoyed licking the pink Wii remote. Good thing it had a protective case!!! :)

Party Decor Preview With A Paper Bag Pinata!!

If you are like me, you desire to have a pinata at your kids' parties (especially if your child is part Latina), but you don't want to have to spend $10-$20 for something they are going to bust open plus an additional $10-$15 on enough candy to fill it, bringing your grand pinata total to more than $30. I don't buy cakes that cost that much. Plus, it can be tricky to find a pinata to go with your theme! Well...we are BOTH in luck, cause I found a tutorial for a Paper Bag Pinata on the blog, Dollar Store Crafts.

I was so excited to put this one together for a TOTAL (with candy) of $10.00!

And here is how:First, I purchased crepe streamers to go with our party color scheme.

Start with a grocery store brown paper bag and cut a little out of the sides.
Fill it with a variety of candy. I chose 5 bags from Dollar Tree.

Have your handy dandy party child hold a hanger in place, while you tape both of the longer sides around the hanger with packing tape.

Then, fringe your crepe paper...I stacked several layers before cutting to save time.
Begin to hot glue the strips on top of one another starting at the bottom of the bag.
Until you have completed the front, back, and both sides..
At that point use a finger to "fluff" all the fringe up.
When it is complete you can either Cricut a cutout for the front, if your child has a Grandma with a giant scrapbook room...OR download a picture off the internet and frame it with ruffled crepe paper as the above blogger chose to do.

I also made 12 matching party hats with some kitties my Mom scrapped up for each one! These were done with two packages of 8 dollar store hats, scrapbook paper cut with one of the hats as a template, 2 fur boas cut to fit and hot glued in place. And to finish it off a 99 cent package of pom poms glued to the tops!

The rest of the decor reveal will have to wait until after the 10th when I post the party pictures.

The Party Season

The children's birthday party season is in full swing around here. We have already done one and been to two (after today), and in March we are hosting two (the girls) and going to 3. Wow.

Vivi's hello kitty party for March 10th is planned and shopped for (minus the food).
I will be working on some more decor projects this weekend for it. I am so excited!! The color scheme and theme are coming together beautifully. I can't wait. She is very excited this year as I have included her in more of the planning and shopping.

I have planned out Jasmine's smash cake design.
Similar to the one above, simple white...but with a little more color that will not be done with food dye or sugar.
So that has been fun!! We are renting a venue for the party...I have the theme planned and the centerpieces started. I am going to have to think outside the box on the decor because the location does not allow things to be taped to walls. But I have got some ideas up my sleeve that involve foam board and window suction cups. :)

March will be a blur with Spring break smack dab in the middle already chock full of activities planned with the kids. By the time Easter rolls around, I will be one tired Mama!!

But for now, we have to get Jasmine healthy.
She goes in for surgery on Wed. to have tubes put in her ears and adenoid removal.
I am SO nervous about this, ya'll.
My boys had their tonsils and adenoids out but they were 3 years old!
She is a tiny baby. Sad. :(

However, I am hoping this means she will be congestion and infection free come March 31st for
Baby's First Birthday Bash!!

Bookshelves and Braids

Sometimes I have really great, thought provoking and inspiring post ideas for my blog...or so I think! Other times I am the Queen of Random.

But that is what keeps you coming back for more, right?

And I promise I won't keep titling all my posts in the same letter.
Apparently I have been streaming too much Cake Boss on the Nook.

About a month or so ago, Isaac and his friend broke the bookshelf in our front room.
How? We don't know. They are 7 year old boys.
We got mad, yes...but then we turned our rage into something more practical and fun...

REDECORATING!!

Here is our blurry Before picture (taken at Jayden's party...pre broken bookshelf)
We threw that out when it broke and I recently came up with the idea to get TWO bookshelves for basically what the one cost us 5 years ago. And the results have been stunning.

Tada!!!They have really made the room pop and even look great through our living room arches.

Here is a day shot. This is the first thing people see when they walk in, so I couldn't be happier with the results.

I even went ahead and picked up this cute porcelain bird on sale for $3.

So, the other day I put faux french braids in Jasmine's hair.
She has received a lot of compliments on this style.

They really frame her face so cutely!!
Basically, I parted 8 pony tails and twisted them into two strand twists with ballies and barrettes for church on Sunday. Then the next day, I took all the hair bling out and connected the twists to one another in a line, mimicking a french braid...Then I connected them together and affixed a bow.
It was really adorable. :)

Parks, People, & My Own Prejudices

The weather here as been in the high 60's and 70's. Beautiful!!
Normally, I would scoff at February weather of this caliber, but being cooped up in a house with 4 kids is not my idea of a fun winter experience. Plus, I have been making spring plans like T-Ball for Jayden and hotel reservations for a road trip during Spring Break...so I am welcoming the feeling of spring even if it is a whole month early!

Plus, Isaac's wildness is much more contained when he can get some good exercise in, so I have been trying to make an effort to take advantage of the great weather.

All three kids have been blessed with fantastic bikes from their Nana and Padre.
So anytime a bike ride is on the schedule, it is very well received by all. :)

Uh Oh! We lost one!
Good thing for big brothers, cause obviously Mom was not going to put the camera down to check on him! And we're off!
I love this nearby park because there is like a mile of sidewalk and it is all contained by grass so I don't have to worry about traffic, or kids riding off into the ditch. It is nice...they get to ride ahead and I get to peacefully push my baby in a stroller while taking a break from the nonstop talking. It's a win-win!

I only hear from Isaac when he needs a water break.

I was so happy that Jasmine is now big enough to ride in her umbrella stroller.
She was so cute!!

As the sun dipped in the sky, the wind became quite cold.
Jasmine always gets teary eyes in the cold.
This is her "where's Jasmine?" face.

Having my particular kids opens a lot of doors for me to have conversations with people that would probably normally just pass me by...figuring we have too little in common to be friends. On this particular trip to the park, Isaac struck up a friendship with a 9 year old boy that I could tell was on the Autism spectrum. Normally I might look at this child and think "what is wrong with that boy? He is too old to act like that?" Isaac could have cared less that the boy was "in his own world", he just liked being chased around by The Leaf Monster. His mom seemed a little embarrassed by her son's actions so when we left Isaac invited them to walk back in the direction we were going. She opened up about his Autism and said it was hard for him to make friends. I said, "because he can't read social cues?" and she got really excited and said, "YES!" I told her I understood and that we were just happy to have had to time to play with them, assuring her that my kids don't care if he wants to make up all the games...they will play along! She made sure we knew the days and times they go to that park.

That made me happy, hoping that we might have made her feel a little less alone in this world.
On Monday, Billy and I went to Ikea to take them up on their free breakfast offers. A black woman in front of me said, "are you foster parents?" we said no, these are our kids. She proceeded to tell us that she was getting her license to be a respite provider through the same foster care agency we had adopted Isaac from. She said how wonderful it was that we adopted black kids because so many agencies have a hard time finding homes for this race. We nodded and said we knew. She was shocked to find out I do Jasmine's hair and said, "Wow, I don't know too many white women that can do hair like that! Well done!" Awesome compliment!! When we parted at the cash register, she asked for our names and said she would pray for us.

Then yesterday I drove into a nearby town to visit a different park. An African American family came up with their four kids, and I will admit they looked a little rough around the edges. The dad had huge tattoos all over his arms and was dressed in a giant basketball jersey. The boys had their heads shaved into an interesting style. I just smiled politely when they passed. I felt real bad and embarrassed that I had prejudged them when later Isaac (0f course!) strikes up a friendship with their boys. The dad came over to where I was and said, "you have a beautiful baby." And that was all it took for us to all get to talking! He shared that they had moved from Dallas where it was nothing but police sirens all the time. He said, "its quiet here in the suburbs. We like it a lot better." Then he opened up about his childhood in Chicago and the gang violence there, which he said killed more people one summer than troops had died in Iraq. When they left the park, it was like we were long lost friends! I prayed to myself, "Thank you God for giving me these opportunities that I would not have had otherwise had my kids looked just like me. Thank you for using these experiences to knock away at my own stereotypes and judgements of people."

My kids are my very own, even if they didn't come out of my body.

But they aren't really mine.

They are God's children whose lives will be used in mighty ways.
As a testimony to the unconditional acceptance and love that comes only through Christ.

I feel beyond privileged to be able to have this role this side of Heaven, in their life journey.

Billy's Latest Book

In the mail today, arrived the latest book that Billy has two articles featured in. Both talk about our journey with Jayden. The table of contents can be seen here:

This book appears to be a fantastic resource as it has categories like: Why Foster; Transitions; Loss, Grief, and Anger; Attachement and Trust, Parenting Teenagers, Allegations, Reunification & Adoption, and more.

It is over 400 pages and looks like a manual or textbook. I think all foster parents should purchase this, and I am not just saying that because I am clearly biased!

That is Isaac and Vivi pictured 3rd down there on the cover. The book also has photos of Billy with our 3 oldest on the back cover, a family photo of us with Isaac and Vivi, and other photos throughout. It is so exciting! Vivi saw her name in the book and shrieked,
"I'm in a book!! I'm in a book!!!"

Tonight, Isaac wanted me to read the article Billy called A Second Chance For A Background, about our joy in having Jayden come home; giving us a huge piece of Isaac's birthfamily and history...even if it was going to be temporary. Isaac started crying and wiping his eyes real fast. I asked him what part of it was making him sad and he said, "the part where Jayden had a lot to go through before he came home to us."

The thought that his brother lived somewhere else for two and a half years really tore him up.
Me too, I told him.

It was so sweet to see this elder brother protective love he has for Jayden.

Billy wrote this article before we finalized Jayden's adoption, so he talks about the possibility that existed for us in taking him and having to face losing him. Billy writes on page 363:
"we're grateful for the memories we got to build with J in our lives, moments like Isaac's first day of kindergarten, Isaac's sixth birthday.
We had spent years praying for a letter or photo from his birthfamily.
We didn't expect we'd get another son."

I choked up reading that and Isaac said "oooh."
The impact of Jayden's life and homecoming hit us at the same time.
He isn't just Isaac's long lost brother, all of our kids have biological siblings "out there"...we have come to terms with that.
The difference with Jayden, is that he is the son we were always meant to have.
He belonged here. God brought him home.

So go get The Foster Parenting Toolbox on Amazon as soon as it releases. :)

Baby Alive

Jasmine is on the move!! She loves to walk her baby stroller all over the house now.

We think she will be walking by her first birthday for sure!
I have been collecting black baby dolls since she was born...because frankly the dark skin tones are NOT easy to find and are often expensive. She has about 6 dolls, and 3 are in her closet for a later date. I realized the other day that they are all Baby Alive dolls! The one on the left was originally a $27 doll that I saw on clearance for $12 over the summer. Although that was a good price... I figured being the black doll I could wait out for it to go even lower. Which it did about a week later, so I snatched it up for $6.50!! Woohoo!! I was so excited about that. :)

On the topic of Baby Alive dolls. Vivi has never had one. Since Jasmine was born, she has been a lot more interested in dolls and she really really wants to open Jasmines, but I told her Jasmine needs to be older to play with these types of dolls. So, I was very excited when Target.com put out a coupon for $8 off the "Lexus" of Baby Alive dolls: the BIG one that eats, drinks, talks, poops, and pees!

I just had to go get it for Vivi's birthday present from us,
at that discount and... well....
because:

Check out the
Hispanic version
of this doll:

She looks JUST like our daughter!!!
Well minus the fact that Vivi's face is not that creepy, HA!!
But check out the hair! I couldn't believe it.

And what makes this doll even more awesome is that out of the 3 ethnicities, this is the only one who speaks her 30 phrases both in Spanish and English, depending where you put her features switch. Vivi has taken such a special interest in Spanish at preschool, and was with me when we got the doll. When we brought her home and wrapped her in pink and white polka dot paper for her hello kitty party in a few weeks, I asked Vivi what the doll's name should be and she said,
"Hola Gatito!"

I laughed SO hard at this!! What a funny, smart daughter I have.

The fact that this doll speaks 30 phrases in Spanish is going to be so great for Vivi because of a very exciting opportunity we have for Vivianna in the very near future,
that I will share at a later date!!
