Why Is Diversity So Scary?

I have had some interesting lessons in dealing with race and ethnicity this week.

My children are going to a new public school that we are not zoned for. The goal in us transferring to this school was to enroll Vivianna in the Dual Language program. It has been a lot of fun to watch her dive in as though going to a Spanish only classroom every other day is what all kids do. But a part of me has been scared for her. She must be a little scared too as she has thrown up now twice in the wee hours of the night because of her excitement and nervousness. She has not expressed not wanting to go, but instead tells stories of how exciting it all is. Her reason for throwing up last night, "I am nervous about spirit day." The day the kids wear their school colors! LOL.
Every day she scampers off with a smile and I spend the day biting my nails in worry about how she is getting by all day not knowing the language.

Yesterday, she told me the cutest story about how the teacher read the book Arthur. I asked, "Was it all in Spanish?" She said, "yes..it was hilarious!" I thought...how does she know it is hilarious when she cannot understand the language? She said that Arthur was in his underwear and the whole class laughed and laughed. I had this image of her sitting cross legged on the group rug and when the page was turned revealing the cartoon character unclothed, the entire class erupted in giggles. She surely would have looked to the tan faced child to her right and the black haired child to her left and giggled right along with them...they all got the joke no matter what language it was told in.
 The thought occured to me,

Laughter is universal.

Smiling, playing, running on the playground, laughing, eating, coloring a picture, going to music class...all the things she does side by side with Spanish speaking kids all day long are universal. Language is no barrier to friendship.

And I LOVE that.

At the parent orientation for Vivi's class, the Spanish and English teachers gave their presentations. The Spanish teacher was so animated in hers and seemed to give much more information. I sat wishing I knew what she was saying and thanking God that one day my daughter will.

*******************************

I overheard an interesting conversation between two fellow cheerleading moms last week. One mom mentioned that they put their house up for sale and when the other mom asked why... she said they wanted to move to a better community and named 3 different high income towns that they were looking to buy in. The other mom said "Oh, so you are moving up in the world."
"Very much so," she replied.

If this statement wasn't shocking enough, she followed it lamenting the bad turn her child's school in our same town had taken, "They are bussing kids in from I~~ Elementary School" she said with an annoyed look on her face. "And it's not good."

Well...she has no idea that I went to great lengths to transfer my children into I~~ Elementary School. I chose not to inform her of this fact because sometimes ignorance just speaks for itself.

So what is so wrong with the children from this school that she has such disdain for...annoyed that her precious little blonde haired, white middle class child has to sit next to "them" in class?

They are low income Hispanic children.
You see, the district must be taking some action to make all the schools more diverse.

The fact is, my kids go to a Title 1 school.

What does that mean? It means that there is a higher rate than normal of low socio economic status students who attend. Therefor, the state gives extra funding to special programs and highly qualified teachers (Isaac's has a Master's degree for example) to make sure that No Child Is Left Behind. The children are given spelling tests based on their skill level, not a general list for the entire class. They are grouped into equal reading and math groups, they are given Ipads in class and go to computer and science labs weekly. The school has a goal to be innovative and technologically driven, multicultural and diverse in its practices, and desires to be an Exemplary campus. It is a school that the district uses as a model for other districts.

I am thrilled that my children have a chance to go to such a fine school. It is beautiful and new and full of so many opportunities that they would not have had at our previous school.

The school is full of Asian, Hispanic, Indian, Middle Eastern, Caucasian, and a handful of African American children. Each class is a mix of races and cultures on every grade level. The school colors are red, white, and blue and the mascot is an eagle.

Seems quite fitting of the environment.

I often wonder, what are people so afraid of when it comes to mingling with people who are not like you? Are you afraid they are less smart then you? Less moral? Does the fact that they may talk differently or even smell differently offend you?

Or are you just nervous around the unknown?
I am sometimes. I get it.
I am hoping that the awkwardness I often feel when out of my comfort zone will not be something passed onto my children.

I hope they will notice differences and likenesses amongst their peers. And I hope they will celebrate it with an attitude of  "so what?"
Those things that are universal amongst them will be what brings them together and make them leaders that bust through stereotypes, fears, and ignorance to pave a way for all people to be valued on the same level...with the same dignity given to them by a God who created us ALL in His image.

I have a strong feeling this year will be a growing opportunity for all of us and am so so proud to be an Eagle parent.

Scheduling

As a family of seven, our schedule has become a bit out of control. We are getting double booked with various kids events at the same time, and things like parent orientation at the school is next to impossible when I have to visit 3 different classrooms presentations at exactly the same time.

I used to get annoyed when people couldn't make my kids birthday parties because of schedule conflicts, but now I see how certain things have to go in lieu of previous commitments. The kids know that they can all participate in one sport or extra curricular activity and one school club...but beyond that, I cannot be in two places at one time and there are just too many of them now!

Billy is having to take off Saturdays teaching guitar because I am grossly outnumbered around here. And there is just no way I could be anyone's room mom anymore, because that would keep me tied down to only one child's class party at the school which isn't fair to the other two kids.

Take our September Calendar for example:
That is just what is scheduled already and the month has not even arrived yet!

Out. Of. Control.

But we will manage like we always do with all the changes around here and hopefully get through the month without too many mishaps. I pray that my exhaustion and our gasoline budget will be a fair price to pay for well rounded kids.

Best Friends

Now that the kids are back in school,
Jasmine has lost her playmates.
She has had no trouble in finding a replacement:

Oscar enjoys anything that allows him to "take a ride".

Even it means playing the part of a baby.

When given the chance to get down, he will not.

 What a pampered pooch.

His payment for being wheeled around is periodic stops
for hugs and kisses.

Who needs siblings when you have a dog.

First Day

My children are back in school today.
I set the table last night for a fun breakfast of apple muffins, apple juice, and warm spiced applesauce.

It was fun to see them all pose out front.
I don't have K by himself because he hates that I blur his face on here!

Check out our bare backpack corner...just Jasmine's waiting for her one day a week preschool to begin.

Tonight when the kids get home they will check their chore pockets and will do the chores on their sticks.

The kids will have to earn their TV, computer, and Nook time with chores and reading.
When they complete their sticks they will earn one Media token. When they read for 15 minutes, they will earn another.

They can only earn two a day.

I love, love, love this time of year because it is a new beginning for all of us...and it means Fall is coming!!!

Stay tuned in the second or third week of September as I roll out my fall decor and new craft projects.

Almost There...

Just three days until school starts, people!!

I am having all kinds of emotions about this.

Relief that the hot, LONG summer days are almost over.
Anxiety about being away from my kids all day, 5 days a week.
Excitement about all the opportunities they will now have at a new school.
Added in is a little bit of worry about how I will handle all of the drop off and pick ups and schedules and desire to volunteer and attend school functions within a very limited time frame and an active toddler on my hip.

And let us not even talk about how nervous I am to have a highschooler!! Ahhh!!!

Okay enough of that.
Because whether I love it or dread it or a little bit of both...school is upon us.

Last night was our Meet the Teacher...or as it shall be described from here on out: move quickly through the hallways filled with people like a giant herd of cattle praying you don't lose one of your five children to the masses. Then on to a forced smile, quick hand shake, and nice to meet you while also dropping off giant sacks of school supplies, correction of your child's name spelling, and moving on to the next teacher to do it all over again two more times as your forehead drips with sweat and your baby screams from her stroller.

Fun times, Y'all.

The good news is we did indeed survive another year of that ritual, and we got a BBQ dinner in the cafeteria for our whole family out of the deal with just a $10 membership to the PTA. Score!

I didn't get pictures of my kids with the teachers because of the afore mentioned chaos, but we did pause in front of the gorgeous music room for a group shot:
Oh they all just seem so little to me still...and yet so big at the same time. I don't cry on the first day of school...but I also don't sleep for the 3 days leading up to it. So this weekend ought to be fun.

I have said it before but I am so so excited for their new school. It is considered an innovative school with technology all over the place and opportunities for kids to discover, design, and be exposed to other people groups. The whole school is very multicultural with a lot of middle eastern families. Everything is done both in English and Spanish, including PTA meetings and parent announcements. They welcome and encourage parent involvement, and even allow for you to observe your child's class instruction once every six weeks.

The kids will have Ipads at school, computer time daily, and even a science lab they attend as part of Specials. It is going to be a fabulous experience for them. As part of the district's new Dual Language Kindergarten, Vivi will of course have two kindergarten classrooms and two teachers that she will rotate every other day...one day full instruction in English, the next in Spanish.

Their clothes are picked out, their backpacks are packed, and now we wait until Monday...

Dentist

My youngest and my oldest had dental appointments on the same day last week. Knocking all these appt's out before school starts has been the goal of August for us. K has to see them once a month for his braces.

I had to find a Medicaid Dentist for the boys who was also in network for my insurance girls. The bonus was they were very nice and had a fun video game room and balloon making center:

It was the baby's very first trip to the dentist...
 She did great.
She didn't cry once and even let the lady scrape her teeth and apply flouride "varnish".
My oldest was whiney, fighty, and just plain disagreeable.
Role reversal in a big way!

And Vivianna, who is not even a patient at this dentist office yet, got a surprise when the Dr. chose to yank out her loose front tooth for me. She was elated!
Isn't that hole just nasty?!

I am praying something fills in there before school picture day cause...yikes!!

Some Days You Gotta Dance

Jasmine likes to turn the player on in the girls room and dance. So I put her in one of Vivi's old leotards and she had a little dance session.

Then she hits the pause button and we freeze!

Then we hit play again and DANCE!
Whew! That was a lot of work.
