10th Anniversary

10 years ago today, I married my best friend.
What a decade we have had together!!

We celebrated as a family at Great Wolf Lodge.
It seemed fitting to all be together for this marriage milestone.
My next post will be a resort review, so stay tuned.

Spring is Full of Fun...LOTS of pictures!

Here are the kids enjoying their spring season to the max. We had Terrance's brother, James' 4th birthday party. SO cute.

Baseball is in full swing around here.

 What a goofball.

I knew grandparents would like these pics.
I promise these should be my last baseball pictures of the season!!

I had the privilege of chaperoning a group from Jayden's pre-k class on their field trip to the zoo.

 Such cuties.

We got to feed the giraffes. Very cool.

Also...some very exciting news around here is that we are planning on buying a house this summer!

We have not owned in 5 years as we sought to get
out of credit card debt completely.

Well...we succeeded with that, and in the past 3 years have added three children to our family. So that has meant we very much need a bigger place. Two bathrooms for seven family members is not cutting it anymore. I uploaded Pinterest to my Nook, so I spend my evenings pinning away in preparation for decorating in my very near future. We are currently in process with a house nearby that has 5 bedrooms, 3 full baths, and is two stories.
This will be a big step for us if it works out.

Here is a sneak preview of the house we are pursuing...
I am especially looking forward to a game room:

Lots of new spots to redecorate:
(the rugs and greenery have GOT to go!)

His & hers sinks and closets AND a spa tub...
(bye bye wallpaper!)

And a large amount of closet space...

This house is in a beautiful community with a pool at the end of the street one way and a golf course at the end of the street the other direction. There is also a nice size lake with a beach in our very neighborhood. Keishun's bedroom and bath and our bedroom and private bath would be on the bottom floor with a split floor plan, and the top floor has 3 bedrooms and the game room with a 2 sink bathroom. This would serve as a boys room, girls room, and a craft room/office for Billy and I.

Can you tell I am excited?

We should know by the end of the week if this is going to work out for us with an estimated close date of mid June.
We are praying with hope, but know that God will provide for us the very house He knows is right.

I'm BACK!!!!

For those of you wondering just where in the world I have been for the past three days, here is an explanation for you!

It started on Thursday when I got this FB message from a reader,

"I've been reading your blog for many years and have enjoyed it very much. I couldn't find your blog today, and I wanted to let you know that I will miss it if you are not able to blog anymore. I hope everything is OK."
~Angela
I quickly replied back that no, I am still blogging at this address NOT EVEN THINKING to go check to see if it was still active. Later that day I went to click on it and it was GONE.
In its place, using my domain name is a weird advertisement-looking webpage.
I panicked, Y'all.
And I mean panicked.
It turns out that my domain name renewal came up through Google with no warning at all to me that this would happen. An expired debit card was used and when it rejected it, they dropped my site all together. In that instance, a cybersquatter who had been lurking just waiting for my renewal to end, snatched up my domain name. This is common amongst website renewal, as it is a way for them to basically hold my domain name hostage until I agree to pay lots of money to retrieve it.
Well that's not going to happen.
AND what gets me is that when you google my old domain name, my posts show in your google feed, but that obnoxious advertising site is all you get WITH quotes from my blog.
 UGH.
What a mess.

Billy and I tried all we knew to figure out a way to recover it. Sweet friends encouraged me on FB when Billy shared about our trials. People suggested we do this and that. Finally, finally we figured out a way to just recover it as blogspot.com.
Thank you, blogger.
Don't let anyone talk bad about you. ;)
So here I am.
But in the meantime I learned a lot from this experience...as God often finds a way of teaching us in our pain.
I learned that my blog is precious to me.
It will now be referred to as my 6th child, peeps.
I also learned that my blog means a lot to many, many people.
And for that I am humbled.
And incredibly grateful.
But most importantly, I learned that Satan does not like my blog.
Imagine that?
I felt his attack come strongly to shut me up.
Maybe he thinks my words are too powerful to the glory of God.
Maybe he thought I would go down without a fight.
Maybe he thought people just didn't care that much.
I think he knows that this blog is doing GREAT things.
Satan tried to shut me up 2 years ago when my racist stalker kept leaving the worst comments about my children, and people advised me to stop blogging or go private.
Well, I didn't go down then without a fight.
And I won't go down now.

No, I won't make my blog private.
No...I won't stop talking about adoption, infertility, foster care, race issues, pain and loss, parenting hurting kids, and Jesus Christ.
What the Enemy meant for evil, God turned it for good.
I am back and I believe this will be bigger than ever.
I even have a facebook fan page you can come on over and "like" anytime, friends!
Losing my blog for that time being made me so, so sad.
It dragged up all of the pain and loss of my past, and made me not want to go forward with trying to restore it. A new friend on FB reminded me that Satan is full of lies and this was exactly how I was feeling. Today I read this quote on Pinterest and think it fits perfectly what I have gone through with this.
So here I am.
And here I will be.

Infertility Is a Silent Pain

I read a lot of books when we were going through our quest to conceive a child. This one by far was the most impactful to me. C.S. Lewis said, "We read to know we are not alone." I very much felt that in these pages. The cover photo used to make me sob. I know the deep deep pain of grieving a child that never existed. I would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold terror sweat with nightmares of miscarriages and lost babies. I would wake up peacefully in the morning after having had a beautiful dream that I was pregnant to the harsh reality that it was only a dream and that now I would have to face another horrible day of poking and prodding at the clinic.

A friends sonogram picture innocently sent over email to announce their greatest news ever...that only took 2 months to happen, mind you... would send me to bed in another wave of grief. I didn't think I could take it anymore.

Infertility in many ways is a silent epidemic. If you are barren and are at a party and someone says, "When are you going to have children?"...you don't answer, "Well. We can't." Nobody wants to invite that friend to their baby shower.

Talk about a mood killer.

So we suffer in silence and we make excuses and we force a smile and say cute things like,
 "When God makes it happen!"

But what if He never does?
That is the fear that is ever present in the mind of an infertile woman.

I had to explore that very question in my life 9 years ago.
What if He never does?

Does that make Him any less Good?
Does that make me any less of his cherished daughter?
Why me?
What have I done to be forsaken like this?

And the answers I always received in my darkest hours were a simple thought,
"Wait."

Not forever. Not for a pregnancy either.
Just wait.

So we did.
And look what happened 5 times in just 6 years.
He settles the barren woman in her home as the joyful mother of children. Praise the Lord!!
~ Psalm 113:9

My facebook status this morning says,
In the book, "Adopting After Infertility" the author says, "We railed and we fought. But in charging through the thickets to find our way, in deciding together which turns to take, we found something more wonderful than we could have imagined and we've arrived in the place we most want to be. Of this we are certain: without infertility the three children who light us with the joy of living would not have been ours to parent. Different children might have brightened our lives-children with his crooked teeth, children with my lazy eye, children who sounded or looked like us. But they would not have been OUR children...the children we were meant to parent." Without infertility, Billy and I would not have the children that light up our world every day and have changed us: Keishun, Isaac, Vivianna, Jayden, and Jasmine.
Praise God for bringing beauty out of the ashes.

April 21-27 Is National Infertility Awareness Week

RESOLVE is an organization that brings awareness to the disease of infertility that affects more than 7 million Americans. Often times, I don't think society accepts it as a "disease". People will say, "oh...you can't have your own kids." As thought it is that simple.

You can check out the NAIW website,
www.resolve.org.
Last night, I posted on Facebook a blog post that my husband wrote in 2010. I wanted to share it with you.
Here is a snippet and you can read this entire blogpost here:

First Attempt at Fertility
 by Billy Cuchens

"I thought about the sad wife I saw in the waiting room and wondered what kinds of procedures she had already endured. Months later, after I got to know couples who had struggled for years with infertility, I would recognize couples like them as common, in which the wife’s dreams of becoming a mother had been annihilated by years of unfulfilled promises from doctors and the husbands walked around in a confused daze wondering what had happened to the woman he’d married and the happy marriage they’d once had."

I will be spending this week reflecting here on our infertility journey. May you find my words comforting. My favorite C.S. Lewis quote is "We read to know we are not alone."

I hope you will find that here.

I Will Try To Fix You

Since welcoming our teenage son home from foster care, it has been obvious to us that we have been called to love in a way that will stretch us beyond our limits at times. The Biblical concept of loving the unlovable comes up often when my son's hurt and anger bubble to the surface and gush out like a volcano.

We usually have no warning it is coming.
Last night was one of these times.

I took Isaac to baseball practice and went to a park with my little ones to let them play. It happened to be that Keishun and two of his friends were on a basketball court nearby, playing a game with several guys they did not know. An altercation erupted and by the time I gathered the kids and quickly headed over there, pushing had happened and I cringed at hearing Keishun shout foul names and words at his closest friend and challenge him to fight. I broke it up by separating the boys and heard,
"You are lucky your Mama was here to save you!"

I guess he was...because Keishun later said, "I believe God put you there Mom at just the right moment.
Cause I was going to hit him hard."

Sigh.
What ensued was my whole night being taken up with discussions with the other boy's parents and then verbal fighting when I confronted my child on his behavior and told him he can't do these things and expect to keep friends. In a surprising turn of events, the friend walked to our house to make amends. I was very impressed and told him so. I told him that no one has done that for Keishun before. He is far too stubborn and prideful to ever do that for himself. I warned him that being my son's friend would come with a price. He would have to turn the other cheek. He might have to put up with behaviors he never would from another guy.
He would have to swallow his pride...because he cannot count on Keishun to do it. My mama heart grieved when he told me the other guys don't like my son because he runs his mouth all the time.

He told me he doesn't like him sometimes either.
But that he was there to set it right.

I asked him to make sure Keishun was worth it.

I told him that I hope very much that he is.
I said that I adore my child to the ends of the earth and back, but that we are dealing with a broken kid.
A boy programmed to fight at all costs.
Easily agitated. Extremely defensive.

A child whose entire life was taken from him at 13.
Whose childhood best friend whom he used to talk about all the time, was ripped from his life with no warning.
And he has never trusted another friend the same way again.

I teared up when I said, "I can't fix him."

Because, I can't.

And in the moments I shared in the backyard at dusk with the only true friend my child has right now in the whole world, a bond was forged.
A bond that said,
"Sweet friend...if you will have my son's back, I will have yours.
 Let's do this thing together.

Because my trust is in the One who can fix him.
And I will stand in the gap between Keishun and a world that tells him he is just another angry black man when he does nothing to disprove that stereotype.
I will stand in the gap when my boy chooses loneliness time and again over relationships that are messy and painful.

With God as my strength when I am too weak to parent a child who requires my everything, I will bring together the pieces of his life that are broken. I can't make him new again, only Christ can. There will always be jagged pieces that don't quite fit back the way they once did. There will be a God sized hole until he surrenders his life to the only One who can fill it.

There is a song that has run through my head all these years since I became a mother to my first son from foster care:
Coldplay's "Fix You".

"When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you."

This child needs me in one way or another all the time. And that's not easy. Especially when I am also raising 4 little ones. Billy said our profile with the devil just went way up when we brought Keishun home. This is holy ground we have stepped upon and satan does not like that one bit.

Satan will discourage and distract us...
he will  exhaust our souls.
He will feed lies into our hearts that things will never be any better.
That broken people cannot be fixed.

And we won't believe a word of it.
The Light of this world has guided this boy home.
And He will fix our son.

We know a man at church who grew up as a little black boy in the roughest part of the ghetto. He was a violent, angry man. He was a criminal. And our Lord changed Him dramatically.
He is now using his life story to help God fix youth facing the same kinds of obstacles.
We will be praying through asking him to mentor our boy.

In the meantime Billy and I are on our knees pleading for our son's safety and salvation as we pray for each one of our children. I am holding out for the day when we see before our very eyes, an unrepentant heart yield to his Savior.

I believe that day will come.
